SSC CGL 2026 Preparation Strategy: Detailed Tier 1 & Tier 2 Study Plan

The Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (SSC CGL) examination is the primary pathway to non-gazetted Group B and Group C posts in central government ministries, including Assistant Section Officer (ASO), Inspector of Income Tax, Central Excise Inspector, Assistant Enforcement Officer, and Auditor.

SSC CGL Examination Scheme

The examination is conducted in two computer-based tiers:

Tier 1 Exam Pattern (Qualifying Stage)

Tier 1 consists of 100 objective questions for 200 marks to be completed in 60 minutes (1 hour). Marks obtained in Tier 1 are qualifying in nature and do not count toward final merit ranking, though candidates must clear category-wise cut-offs to qualify for Tier 2.

• General Intelligence & Reasoning: 25 Questions | 50 Marks
• General Awareness: 25 Questions | 50 Marks
• Quantitative Aptitude: 25 Questions | 50 Marks
• English Comprehension: 25 Questions | 50 Marks

Negative marking in Tier 1 is 0.50 marks per incorrect response.

Tier 2 Exam Pattern (Merit-Deciding Stage)

Tier 2 is divided into sessions conducted on the same day:

Session I (2 Hours 15 Minutes):

• Section I (1 Hour): Module 1: Mathematical Abilities (30 Qs) + Module 2: Reasoning and General Intelligence (30 Qs) = 60 Qs (180 Marks, 3 marks each, -1 negative mark).
• Section II (1 Hour): Module 1: English Language and Comprehension (45 Qs) + Module 2: General Awareness (25 Qs) = 70 Qs (210 Marks, 3 marks each, -1 negative mark).
• Section III (15 Minutes): Computer Knowledge Module (20 Qs | 60 Marks) — Qualifying in nature, but higher qualifying marks apply for specific technical posts like ASO in CSS or Inspector.

Session II (15 Minutes): Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) Module. Candidates are required to type a passage of approximately 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes.

Section-Wise Study Strategy

1. Quantitative Aptitude

Focus on Arithmetic (Percentages, Profit & Loss, Ratio & Proportion, Time & Work, SI/CI) followed by Advanced Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Mensuration). Memorize multiplication tables up to 30, squares up to 50, and cubes up to 30 to boost calculation speed.

2. Reasoning & General Intelligence

Practice Syllogisms, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Analogy, Matrix, Series, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Accuracy and speed can easily yield 45+ marks in Tier 1.

3. English Language

Grammar basics (Subject-Verb Agreement, Tenses, Prepositions, Active/Passive Voice, Direct/Indirect Speech) combined with daily vocabulary building (Synonyms, Antonyms, One-Word Substitutions, Idioms & Phrases) are essential for scoring in the 45-question Tier 2 module.

4. General Awareness

Cover Static GK (Indian History, Geography, Polity, Science, Culture) alongside 6 months of current affairs. Solve previous 5 years' SSC CGL, CHSL, and CPO question papers to understand repeating question themes.

Mock Test Analysis Routine

Take at least 2 full-length mock tests per week during preparation and 1 mock test daily during the final 30 days before the exam. Always spend 60 minutes analyzing incorrect answers and unattempted questions to eliminate repeating mistakes.
