RRB NTPC & Group D Exam Guide: Selection Process, Physical Tests & Syllabus

Indian Railways is one of the largest employers in the world. The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) and Railway Recruitment Cells (RRCs) manage major national recruitments, primarily under two categories: RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories for Undergraduates and Graduates) and RRC Group D (Level-1 Posts).

1. RRB NTPC Selection Process

RRB NTPC covers posts like Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk, Trains Clerk, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Goods Guard, Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Station Master, and Commercial Apprentice.

NTPC Stage 1 CBT (Common for all posts):

• General Awareness: 40 Questions
• Mathematics: 30 Questions
• General Intelligence & Reasoning: 30 Questions
• Total: 100 Questions | 100 Marks | 90 Minutes (1/3rd negative marking)

NTPC Stage 2 CBT:

• General Awareness: 50 Questions
• Mathematics: 35 Questions
• General Intelligence & Reasoning: 35 Questions
• Total: 120 Questions | 120 Marks | 90 Minutes

Typing Skill Test / CBAT:

For clerical posts, a Computer-Based Typing Test is conducted (30 WPM in English or 25 WPM in Hindi). For Station Master posts, a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT / Psycho Test) is mandatory.

2. RRC Group D (Level 1) Selection Process

Group D recruitment covers positions like Track Maintainer Grade IV, Helper/Assistant in Electrical, Mechanical, and S&T departments, and Pointsman.

Single-Stage CBT Pattern:

• General Science: 25 Questions (Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences up to 10th standard)
• Mathematics: 25 Questions
• General Intelligence & Reasoning: 30 Questions
• General Awareness & Current Affairs: 20 Questions
• Total: 100 Questions | 100 Marks | 90 Minutes

Physical Efficiency Test (PET) Parameters:

Clearing CBT leads to the mandatory PET screening test:

Male Candidates:

• Lift and carry 35 kg weight for a distance of 100 meters in 2 minutes in one chance without putting the weight down.
• Run for a distance of 1,000 meters in 4 minutes and 15 seconds in one chance.

Female Candidates:

• Lift and carry 20 kg weight for a distance of 100 meters in 2 minutes in one chance without putting the weight down.
• Run for a distance of 1,000 meters in 5 minutes and 40 seconds in one chance.

Medical Fitness Standards

Railway medical standards are strict, especially regarding distant vision and color vision (A-1, A-2, A-3, B-1 categories). For instance, Station Master and Pointsman posts require A-2 vision (6/6 without glasses and no color blindness). Always verify visual standards in the official notification before applying.
